I {heart} Sandra Bullock, and The Proposal is an enjoyable rom-com

I just saw “The Proposal”, and I loved it.  Among the plethora of predictable romantic comedies in recent movie history, “The Proposal” delivers a funny and improbable love story, headlined by Sandra Bullock (Miss Congeniality) and Ryan Reynolds (Wolverine).

This is partially because Bullock (now showing her age in many long, revealing close-ups) is still a beautiful and lovable performer even when playing a witchy character, as she does (or at least tries) in this movie.   Her co-star, Ryan Reynolds, adds more goodlookingness overall, and together they’re a couple of talented actors who give weight to their characters and high-concept plot.  Yes, “The Proposal” is pretty formulaic in the tradition of most rom-coms, but it successfully entertains without tripping over itself with overused jokes.

The story is this: a demanding, cantankerous book publishing executive, Margaret (Bullock), forces her assistant, Andrew (Reynolds), to marry her in order to save her from being deported to her native Canada after her U.S. Visa expires.  Hilarity and possible romance ensue as they try to convince Andrew’s family of the pending wedding, while holding off the suspicious immigration.

You don’t need to know much more than that since it’s about enjoying the journey anyway.  Did I mention Sandra Bullock’s in it?  Okay, I admit I’ve had a crush on Sandra Bullock since 1995’s The Net, although when she married Jesse James, I liked her less, mainly because I thought she was going to marry me.  But whatever, I’ve moved on.  All crushing aside, I still enjoy her movies.

And “The Proposal” is no exception, since it uses the proper balance of sweet, serious, and funny, making it more than a typical “chick flick” (a term I loathe, by the way).   Both men and women should enjoy this movie, and I think Jesse James can go fly a kite.

Just go see it ;)

  1. I just saw the Proposal today and couldn’t agree more with your post–I absolutely loved it.

Huge Bullock fan all the way back to my favorite romantic comedy of all time, While You Were Sleeping. Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman…it doesn’t get much better than that.

  2. aw yeah! i agree. i really like While You Were Sleeping. Even Two Weeks Notice – which seems like it could be related to the story of the Proposal. (The themes of inter-office boss/assistant romance)

  3. I really wanted to watch ‘The Proposal’ but missed it in theatres! Though I did catch ‘Duplicity’ over the weekend and unlike Sandra, Julia Robert’s close-ups were not so favorable. Granted, every one ages, but it’s pretty visible on her.

That said, my eyes were mainly on Clive Owen. Lol, he might not be a text-book hottie, but he’s got a lot of sex appeal!

PS – Sorry I just ranted on about a movie that has nothing to do with ‘The Proposal’, lol.
