TRANSFORMERS (2007)
Optimus Prime is still cool, but the new Transformers the movie half-sucks. I just came home from a screening and it wasn’t what I expected. Although, I’m not sure what I was expecting from a movie about giant, battling, shape-shifting, alien robots, but I know I was expecting better.
I loved Transformers when I was a little kid, but I honestly don’t remember much. I’m glad that Optimus Prime is still a semi-truck, but have a few qualms with the type of semi and the flamey red decals. But whatever.
Anyway, the new Transformers movie has a very basic and weak plot that drags big-time in the beginning, and wastes some of its talented cast like Shia LaBeouf’s comedic skills, and the acting chops of Jon Voight and John John Turturro. And will someone tell me why this girl is in the movie other than for being blatant eye-candy? She does nothing but bad reactions for the camera.
At almost two-and-a-half hours, Transformers blows some potentially great/funny scenes, creating many boring and awkward moments in the scenes involving humans. What’s strange is that the human scenes seem very cold, lifeless, robotic, while the scenes with the actual robots are more interesting, more ‘human’. Perhaps that was the intention of the director?
And remind me again why the director, Michael Bay, is such a big deal?
More than meets the eye? I wish.
