*****WHY I LOVE M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN*********
I am a huge fan of the director/writer, M. Night Shyamalan. Yes, i think that highly of him, i capitalize his name. First up, he’s rokkin-talented with great vision and storytelling skills.
I loved all three of his major films (sixth sense, unbreakable and signs) and i want him to continue making movies. Yes, his gimmicky twist-ends may start to get old and perhaps he should not write surprise ends on which the entire movie relies. BUT I still believe M. Night Shyamalan is extremely talented by giving us simple, minimalist stories, told in a creative way.
He is a great visual director who is savvy about film and he knows what he wants. He isn’t a typical hollywood director, but at the same time can be categorized as ‘hollywood’. Like spielberg, he can tell fun creative stories and make them blockbusters: movies that people wanna see.
People might dislike Shyamalan for his sorta ‘appealing-to-the-masses’ movies, but the same can be said to the much-revered director/writer Quentin Tarantino. Both these director/writers know movies and they have creative stories to tell, but they also want people to watch them because they themselves are lovers of movies.
My long-whinded point is that I like the director and his films. And I plan to see every one he makes. He’s one of my favourite filmmakers if not THE favourite.
one more thing…..
And i know people might be perturbed that i bring this issue up and no offense to people reading this, but another reason i like M. Night Shyamalan is cuz he’s not white. yes i said it.
i have to admit that i’m probably biased because mr. shyamalan is indian-american(or non-white). sure he grew up with wealthy doctor/nurse parents in the philadelphia suburbs, but in this case, who cares? to me, he’s still not white.
Now, you may be wondering: “what the heck? aren’t you mexican?” and to that i respond: ‘why yes i am. why the connection you may ask?’
well, it’s encouraging to see “people of colour” in positions of media power like director/writer.
again, no offense to white people, i’m merely stating my opinion as a mexican-american who is encouraged to see minorities in the media. this, i must stress, does NOT include Jennifer “glam-sham” Lopez, Ricky “am i gay or not?” Martin, or Christina “skank” Aguilera, or even “I’ll take anything” Edward Olmos.
but i digress…
It’s cool to see a ‘person of colour’ in the director/writer role. especially when he/she is a strong enough presence to use their name–a hard to pronounce one at that–and people go ‘cool, i wanna see that’.
just as people recognize Spielberg and Tarantino, they will soon recognize M. Night Shyamalan.
now perhaps mr. shyamalan does not care about ethnicity and non-whiteness, perhaps he might want to be a ‘force to be reckoned with’ without mention or emphasis on colour, and being a ‘minority’ isn’t an issue at all to him. But to a little folk like me who happens NOT to be white: he is a champion.
M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN IS MY HOMEBOY. mark the date, you heard it here first ;)
