Although I favor better wages and treatment for employees, we must also consider the choice to work, job availability, and other things.
In America, food service jobs aren’t the only jobs available. Food service workers aren’t scarce either. Those are some of the factors that keep wages low for food service workers. As one of the commenters mentioned: it’s basic supply and demand. No one is forced to work those jobs.
And another commenter brought up the point that we would all be in favor of higher wages for food servers if we as a culture were not so pressured into tipping.
