I saw ‘Red Eye’, the movie, last night. And I was surprised to enjoy it. It’s a pretty fun thriller/suspense with a simple, move-along story that is ultimately very entertaining.
It follows a good formula:
introduce characters and setting, including tight closeups on the necessary plot elements we’ll remember later, characters meet, conflict begins, conflict plays out with a few bumps and smirks, gasp! climax, SIGH resolution, end with cheesy line, credits roll.
we walk outta the theatre smiling, thinking: that was pretty cool. It didn’t try to be anything more than it was, the important characters were played well, the story was simple and to the point, and the bad guy loses. everyones happy!
Yeah, there are several problems with the movie, both technically and plot-ly, but it doesn’t matter, because the story keeps moving, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I think it’s because of the simplistic story and hammy side characters. These side characters are kinda broad caricatures thrown in to add some cheese, reminding us that yes, it’s just a movie.
Cillian Murphy did great. He’s got that crazy-cool face, so you can trust him as well as fear him. I’ve only seen him previously in Batman Begins, another film he was in which he was totally awesomeisticalatious, but I’m looking forward to more films with him in them. Oh yes, duh, Rachel McAdams is great in her role too. She’s totally not a Mean Girl in this one.
So anyway, it’s a cool movie. I know I didn’t really give you a summary of what it’s about, but you’ll get enough of that from movie reviews and previews and you STUPID CHATTY FRIENDS WHO DON’T SHUT UP ABOUT A MOVIE WHEN YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT!! oh what? was that out loud?
Red Eye BONUS: female heroes. We get the familiar damsel-in-distress part, but then are treated to a strong women thinking on their feet without running around in dental floss and a bazooka. Okay, yeah, I suppose you can argue that a man still ends up saving the day at the right moment, but in the big picture, it’s the women who win the war. Just go see it. It’s worth it I think.
