I’ll only write as long as I can come up with clever exaggerations.
December 19, 2006. Day #2 at Trend Micro
Um, well, my computer still didn’t come in. But before I left yesterday, I got a temporary laptop. So I got to check my company email. I had a bajillion. Some were like time sensitive stuff: READ AND SIGN TODAY(which was yesterday) OR YOU’RE FIRED. anyway, i read stuff and signed stuff. emailed people, grabbed and gave contact info. got some orientation. blah blah blah.
And in some of the emails, I got a little taste of some of the stuff I’ll be doing. And basically it’s hard. A lot more technical than I’m used to. I think may actually have to work hard at this job. I can’t slide by anymore.
I had a meeting with my U.S. manager. he’s cool. I was supposed to have a meeting with him in the morning. but he had a buttload of meetings to get to, so we decided to meet for lunch. i went back and forth with some emails and then talked with HR for some other logistical stuff. and then 12:30 came around and we went for lunch.
suckily, we went to a chinese food restaurant. which i never noticed is like right outside the building in the friggin parking lot. It’s like two steps away. dang. i didn’t have the heart to say “um, Manager Guy, from the depths of my soul, i simply loathe the food of the Chinese”.
Alas, we went, and the place was hoppin’. that’s kindofa dumb word: hoppin’. I had the Lemon Chicken with Steamed Rice. It came with some other stuff that I didn’t get to see cuz they took the menus away too quickly. we were in a rush to order becauser we were in the middle of a conversation. so i was like CRAP!! they just took the menu and i didn’t get a chance to see if the “extras” it came with were composed of some unholy concoction of seafood. see, i don’t like seafood either. and i didn’t see if it was like ‘octopus soup’ and rabbit foot potstickers or whatever. cuz usually if the extras are weird, i just substitute it for something. but i didn’t get to substitute anything.
anyway, the server came back with some soup and a salad. the salad was good. it had some chicken breast pieces on it. i was pleased. i looked at the soup. It kinda looked like dark eggflower soup or something, and i noticed some tofu chunks. or what looked like tofu chunks. they couldabeen dried squid arms or tentacles or whatever they’re called. and because we were talking and i wanted to be polite i just dunked my spoon in the soup and took a bite. and in the split second that it took the spoon to get to my mouth, i screamed inside: God, please don’t let it be any type of seafood”
when the liquid hit my tastebuds. TANGY! and a bit SPICEY! or spicy? hmm.. how do you spell that. it looks like “spicky”. anyway, it wasn’t bad. and whaddayknow? i find out it’s called Hot and Sour soup.
So the lemon chicken came. and the bowl of steamed rice. it was then i regretted not getting the fried rice. so it was pretty bland. but the chicken was actually good. i didn’t die, and that’s pleasing.
that was a pleasant experience. i only hate chinese food a little bit now.
anyway, i got back. and did some more reading and email stuff. logistics, blah blah blah. read a lil’ more of my american cinematographer magazine. called up all the Best Buys around and found that none actually sell Apple/Mac products in the stores… only online. CompUSA did. but they had a restocking fee of 15%. I desperately needed a mac computer temporarily to finish a project. I wanted to take it back when i was done. but i didnt’ want to pay the restocking fee.
i filled my bottle of water with …water. oh! another cool thing…. the drinks are only a quarter in the vending machine! so if i forget to bring my own water bottle, all i need is a quarter. as opposed to my last job where you had to like donate blood to the friggin machine before it gave you a water bottle. and on top of that it was never stocked with water anyway. those evil vending machine folks wanted us to die of dehydration and kidney disease. punks.
but the Famous Amos cookies in the snack food machine are a dollar. that’s a little weird. but someone makes fresh coffee every morning. this is good.
okay, where was i? um…later on in the afternoon i went to a meeting where we went over web analytics data. it was pretty hardcore. and it was only for a certain section of the site. anyway, my brain hurted after.
and then i went home. and found out that Rafael, a friend is coming back to town for a couple days, so I can borrow his Mac Mini to finish the aforementioned project. WOOHOO!!
what sucks is that I got home late. but i didn’t doze off on the way home. (i did in the meeting though. that was embarrassing) but i stopped by Rollick’s. A local coffee shop. It’s gotta a cruddy web site, but they’re cool. I talked with a fellow artist who works there, Orlando. We talked about a local urban art gallery who isn’t giving a call out for local talent. Kinda perturbing.
um. and now i’m typing this. and my coffee’s done. and i want ice cream. and i wanna sleep, but i hafta wait for Rafael to get into town so I can start working on the video stuff.
Mundanely,
