So, several people, including family, friends and strangers, questioned my seemingly harsh thoughts on the new “Transformers” movie. Apparently, everyone who saw the movie loved it. And I seem to be one of the few folks who couldn’t get passed the retardedly simple storyline and stiff human actors.
People asked me why I had hated it so much, and that they loved it. A friend said she loved it because she felt like a kid again, while watching it in the theatre. Another friend said he loved all the great jokes sprinkled throughout the movie.
Weird. I admit, my thoughts were exaggerated and extremeified for INK’s publication. I enjoyed the action and the robots, and felt like a giddy schoolgirl when Optimus Prime first appeared, but heck, I definitely didn’t love it.
A part of me wants to watch it again to see if I first saw it as a “movie critic” rather than an average fan. I kinda want to see if that affected my initial reaction to the film.
But honestly, I tend to watch all movies with a sense of wonder to allow myself to get lost in them, beyond the critic’s mentality into the realm of an everyday human being who enjoys visual storytelling.
By doing this, you and I can see passed the possibly pointless or weak plots of movies like “Lost in Translation” or “Napoleon Dynamite”. We can simply enjoy the movie without having to break it down from a filmic standpoint.
However, for some reason, Transformers just couldn’t make me forget the uselessness of Megan Fox, the misuse of Jon Voight and John Turturro, the annoyance of the little boombox, comic-relief Decepticon, or the dorky flamey red decals along the side of Optimus Prime when he’s in semi-truck mode (not to mention that he’s not the same body style as the original toy version).
Either everyone’s really dumb, or I just missed something. Probably the latter, even though I hope for the former.
One thing is certain though - Shia Labeouf is still one of my favorite actors to watch. Like I said in my review of Disturbia, I think he could be the next Tom Hanks. And by the way, I thought of that before I read that Spielberg thinks the same thing. Now Vanity Fair is saying it on their front cover of the recent issue.
Along with Denzel Washington, M. Night Shyamalan, and Johnny Depp, Shia Labeouf is my homeboy.
