Tupac Remembered… for what?

I got this in a MySpace bulletin today. Perhaps some of you read it too.

Today marks the 9 year anniversary of Tupac Amaru Shakur’s passing. He was shot on September 7th in 1996 and died on the 13th. Fans around the world today will bump his music loud and remember the man who was so much more than just a rapper. Tupac was without a doubt one of the greatest artists ever yet his talent stretched into many other areas including acting. After the release of “Loyal To The Game”, the Shakur estate appeared to be content with the releases they had put out and signalled that the Eminem produced album would be the last release from Tupac. Since then, it appears that there will in fact be at least one more release from the man who has had more music released in death than when he was alive.

Tupac Shakur, Rest In Peace.

Now, i don’t mean to be mean to the poster of this(my former co-worker), BUT i had to speak a lil’ mind…

tupac shakur should be remembered….for what?
for perpetuating the ‘thug life’ and the myth that the ghetto swallows your life?
yeah he may think he’s a rose that grew outta concrete, but what does that really mean? did he rise above the oppressive circumstances. or did he embrace it and use it as a crutch?

sure i’ll go along with the ‘white oppressor’ excuse, but ultimately it is our choice to rise above the crap thrown at us. but rising above our oppressor doesn’t mean we’re gonna be richer or smarter or better. it means we’ll be at peace and the oppressor will bask in their own misery.

there are plenty who get angry at these words saying “it’s cuz you don’t know what it’s like” or “you don’t know nothing about living in the ghetto”. so i never lived in a ghetto… does that mean i’m completely ignorant to society’s woes? i bet i could even argue that i’d be more privvy to them. but that’s not my point.

we all go through some stuff, and some of us get a bum deal. but there are many in that ‘bum deal’ category who wake up every morning with a smile on their face. the world may be crumbling around them, but they go to work, they have confidence, they have peace, joy.

the Man’s actions don’t mess with who you are. You are the ultimate chooser of what you will do and who you will be. your trials and oppression serve to cause compassion for the needy, for the poor and the oppressed. your trials serve to remind you that they can knock you down, but they can’t keep you down. and in the end, you are always the better person. okay that was unnecessary. back to the ‘pac…

if you live in the ghetto, your experiences never leave you. of course, your experiencs are part of who you are. but to continually philosophize that the ghetto is a lifetime commitment is just stupid.

Tupac Shakur’s actions, reactions and music got him fame and money. and then what? where are the people he helped? what good has he brought to society? to the world?
sure, ‘his music lives on’. and?

the generations of people who love his words and music provide no benefit to his memory. he should not be remembered as a hero. but as another lost potential. he cannot be seen as a champion of the people, especially black people. he was not and is not a positive figure in black history or american history. his deeds cannot be remembered with a smile, he was not someone you should tell your kids to be like, his actions and words serve only to remind us that bright minds and talent should not be wasted. another man with potential is remembered today. a man who never fulfilled his potential. a talent to be admired, but ultimately forgotten.

his life was ended by someone else. someone who didn’t allow this man to perhaps change directions and really give the world what he wanted to give. but it’s all could have, maybe. and he’s gone.

he was a talented writer and performer, a man gifted with word expression. but the talent was squandered and choked by a the glorious thug life.

what could he have done if his ways would have changed? what would he have done? would he have changed? would he have shed the garb and skin of the ‘gangsta’? would he have turned millions to the light of artistic peace? if he were alive today, what would Tupac Shakur be doing? the same thing? leading the generation into foolishness by the dim light of violence and lies? what would he do?
