So last night amid all our moving, we settled down to watch Valentin - an Argentinian film. it’s a really cool movie, about a cross-eyed, 8-year-old boy, Valentin, who wants to be an astronaut, while living among a dysfunctional familly in the late 1960s.
he lives with his nagging grandma, who’s in constant grieving for her husband, valentin’s grandfather–who passed away. he’s also plagued with the memory of his absent mother, and wonders why she doesn’t want to see him anymore. His father is a selfish man, never around, and occasionally shows up to tell the news of a new girlfriend he wants to marry.
It sounds weird, but it has a wonderful little story. It’s so cool just watch this little boy playing out a slice of his life for us. His speech and attitude are way older than an average boy his age, but that’s not the point - we aren’t supposed to assume he’s some sorta genius. he’s just a funny little kid who wants to have a family.
The actor who plays Valentin is really talented, very natural. But isn’t that the case with most of these latin-american films? the kid actors are generally more natural in their performances. They aren’t all oscar-conscious like our actors, haha.
I think the movie’s even better if you understand spanish**. Because you can understand the words that are really being said, as well as experience the dramatic and humourous way Latinos speak in their native languages. The conversations in the movie are more interesting when you’re not completely dependent on the subtitles - especially because Valentin is such a funny little character.
Valentin’s a great movie, and you should go rent it.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Coach Carter - good. light, inspiring, traditional.
Be Cool - blah! sucked. Get Shorty was awesome
Enduring Love - boooh! began good, ended bad. story no good.

*i just assumed it was Argentinian by the accent, the names, and some elements of the story. i just looked it up on imdb right now, and yup it’s argentinian, but of course it has italy and netherlands involved.
**it’s the same when you understand the actual language of any “foreign” film you see
