We Own the Night, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? Open this week

Opening in theatres this week: “We Own the Night“, “Elizabeth: The Golden Age“, and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?”.

I need to review one for INK this week, but I’m looking forward to all three movies actually. But I wonder which is most attractive to the mass movie-going audiences this week. Tyler Perry has a big following and has proved to be a box office sucess with his lower-budgeted, but highly entertaining family/relationship comedy-dramas. Joaquin Pheonix and Mark Wahlberg will probably draw big crowds, but “We Own the Night” seems a little moody and dramatic. And it might remind audiences of the “The Departed” which could be a bad thing (or a good thing).

As for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”, I loved the first “Elizabeth” movie, and thought Cate Blanchett should have won some more awards for that role. The acting, the story, the lush costuming and cinematography…and now she’s back with the same director (Shekhar Kapur) for a sequel? Totally. Awesome. If you haven’t seen Elizabeth, I highly recommend. Cate Blanchett is a great actress and the trailer might attract a big audience because of the action, drama, love story, and even the Braveheart-esque Elizabeth (Blanchett) ralleying the troops before battling the Spanish army.
We Own the Night (crime/cop drama)
Joaquin Pheonix, Mark Wahlberg, Robert Duvall. A crime drama about a club owner who is son and brother to police officers must choose side between his family’s profession or the drug dealer friends in his club.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (historical drama)
Historical Drama. Cate Blanchett. A historical drama about Queen Elizabeth of England and her defending her empire from the attack of Spain’s King Philip. Along the way, she balances her forbidden love with Sir Walter Raleigh, while her court might have discovered an assassination plot against her.

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? (comedy/drama)
Eight married college friends reunite for their annual retreat in the snowcapped mountains of Colorado, they come expecting fun and relaxation, but get a completely unexpected surprise. I’ve seen the play version of this on DVD and it’s about love and marriage - and all the tragedy, backstabbing, sadness, ups and downs. Issues from divorce, affairs, weight issues, family, etc. All ending with a positive and encouraging message of course.
