Reciting “That’s My King!” by S.M. Lockridge – Video

Various versions of the late S.M. Lockridgeā€˜s original speech, ā€œThatā€™s My King!ā€œ, have been mixed and remixed into cool videos over the years; this video is a grainy recording of me reciting it as part of a larger performance at a church several years ago.

When I was 13 or 14, my pastor read bits of this speech/sermon. It might have been the atmosphere or something to do with my state of existential angst, but I was so inspired by these God-proclamations that I immediately wanted to say those words too. So I memorized it.

ā€œNo means of measure can define His limitless love. No far-seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shoreless supply.

S.M. Lockridge, ā€œThatā€™s My King!ā€

The next week, contrary to my generally introverted nature, I recited these words at a Sunday church gathering. I felt my heart swell as I spoke these words; a life-giving and life-receiving connection to the One they glorified, and to the people listening. It was as though I was being introduced to the God I thought I knew most of my life. For me, the Redeemer-King Jesus became more real to me in reciting these words, and theyā€™ve been a part of me ever since.

ā€œDo you know Him? Well, my king, Heā€™s the greatest phenomenon that has ever crossed the horizon of this worldā€¦ He stands alone in the solitude of Himself. And heā€™s the only One qualified to be an all-sufficient saviour.ā€

S.M. Lockridge, ā€œThatā€™s My King!ā€

At the time, I didnā€™t know who Shadrach Meshach Lockridge was. When I finally learned more about him, and actually heard his voice say the words that had so deeply affected my life, I found out heā€™d already passed away. Lockridgeā€™s church was only a day-trip away to San Diego ā€” incidentally, the eventual relocation of my pastor from whom I first heard the speech!

I always kinda wished I could have met or seen Lockridge say these words (or one of his notable variations) in person. Maybe I would have told him how his recorded adoration of our King was a part of my spiritual growth. Maybe Iā€™ll get to tell him after That Great Day. Maybe weā€™ll be too busy celebrating with the King.

The Lord will then be king over all the earth. In that day the Lord will be seen as one with a single name. ~ Zechariah 14:9

Zechariah 14:9

Lockridgeā€™s wordsā€“ā€œThatā€™s My King!ā€ā€“remain timeless and inspiring because they remind us of the scriptures and its primary Subject: the sovereign God, Yahweh, El Shaddai; the King who dwelt among us in the form of the man, Jesus, the Messiah; the second Joshua, the new Moses, the last Adam, Yeshua bin David / bin Yosef / bin Ephraim, the Son of Man, the Son of God; offering Himself as the one and only qualified sacrifice and saviour to reconcile my soul with its Creator.

Thatā€™s My King.

ā€œI wish I could describe Him to you. But Heā€™s indescribable! You canā€™t get out of your mind, and you canā€™t get Him off your hands. You canā€™t outlive Him and you canā€™t live without Him.

The Pharisees couldnā€™t stand Him because they found out they couldnā€™t stop Him. Pilate couldnā€™t find any fault in Him. Herod couldnā€™t kill Him. Death couldnā€™t handle Him, and the grave couldnā€™t hold Him!ā€

Anthony Ramos Illustration

Anthony Ramos has been on my ‘to draw’ list for a long time, and after recently seeing “In the Heights” several times in theaters, I finally got around to making an illustration based on a photo from his instagram feed. See my instagram post. And go see In the Heights. No, sshhh, just go.

L’Chaim! Tree of Life Couple Mural Design

Themes swirling around in this mural design:
Tree of Life / Cross on top — the first tree and the last tree — symbolizing the Creator’s covering and blessing over the marriage design of male and female joined as one, (an artsy blessing on my own marriage); this sacred union as offering unto God, the ‘offering flame’ of old Hebrew calligraphy (spelling l’chaim) is a nod to the roots of the Bible and my faith

L’Chaim! To Life! – a declaration of double blessing and abundant life.

I’m not a huge fan of explaining my artwork. I don’t always properly verbalize what basic visuals can. most of the time it’s personal, and I just want to make something aesthetically pleasing.
Anyway….a black and white design was the goal. And several of The Bible Project‘s awesome videos might’ve been on my mind.

Olive Tree of Life Burning Bush Mural at Home

More painting on the walls. It’s basically a colourful olive tree and a big ol’ dove – not the official title but yeah….

Stream-of-conscious thoughts behind this painting: burning bush / consuming fire / olive tree / tree of Life / wheat / chaff / noah’s dove / holy spirit / holy rest / shabbat shalom / peace
Yahweh (God) can be a consuming or devouring fire (Deuteronomy 4:24, 9:3; Hebrews 12:29) that separates the wheat from the chaff (examples: Luke 3, Psalm 83, Jeremiah 23); a burning tree or bush that isn’t consumed while on fire, ready to deliver His people (Exodus 3).
God is also a God of peace. Olive trees are connected to peace: peace after a storm, peace amongst nations, between God and the earth, between God and humanity. Olive trees produce olives which produce the oil representative of God’s Spirit in scripture.
And Trees are a big theme throughout the collection of books called the Bible – Hebrew scripture and the New Testament writings. The Tree of Life in the Garden; strength, steadfastness; and representative of people.
All these ideas are mixed up in this tree image. The dove in the corner was a bit of an afterthought, but it’s appropriate to the peace/calm element of the painting.

California Poppies (Sorta) Mural at Home

Started painting on the walls. Some orange California poppies and my totally OSHA-kosher ladder. They still kinda look like hibiscuses to me. Too lazy to fix it ;D
